Personal Opinion on AI Use in Art
While I can recognize the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) in some specific use cases, I don’t see a place for AI in creative fields. Generative AI is trained by scraping wide swaths of the internet for human-made creations such as visual art, novels, music, etc., and using those works to be able to make something seemingly new with just a simple prompt. That something seemingly new is, at it’s simplest, a conglomerate of stolen art.
I wouldn’t condone a person who takes artist’s work and copies them to make something vaguely different but still ultimately stolen. In the same way, I cannot condone generative AI models’ profiting off the backs of hard working artists.
The weird, wild, creative things that humans make are one of the best things about us. Outsourcing that work to a few companies that will rake in billions while putting us out of our jobs is silly.
Until we see meaningful regulation and guardrails for truly safe use of these products, I won’t give it the time of day beyond writing this statement.
